An indispensable tool in the preparation of our favorite dishes, the role of the cutting board remains however wrongly neglected. Let's be honest - we all tend to "forget" to clean it after each use, which makes it a real germ nest. Once these settle into the notches, the board is anything but hygienic. If you often wonder "How do you clean a cutting board?" », Our article of the day is the answer for you. Discover our list of tips and techniques and adopt them to clean your wooden or plastic boards.
Why is cleaning the cutting board so important?
Just as we take care of the cleanliness of dishes, glassware and cutlery, cleaning the worktop and the cutting board is part of the hygiene habits to be adopted without even thinking about it. Why ? As explained above, your cutting board can quickly become a breeding ground for bacteria if you fail to maintain it properly and carefully after each use. Add to this a cocktail of food smells (garlic, onion, aromatic herbs, meat, fish and so on) and a whole host of unknown stains, the cleaning of which is more like a hassle. Now it's up to you to learn how to clean a wooden and plastic cutting board and enjoy good health.
How to clean a wooden cutting board?
Do you own a wooden cutting board? Before giving you some tips on proper cleaning, we would like to reveal something to help you keep it in top condition. A little oil will suffice to restore the shine to the natural material. In addition, oiling the wooden cutting board helps the wood to form a protective layer. It is recommended to use an odorless and tasteless oil such as almond or grape seed oil. On the other hand, olive oil should be avoided, because it makes the wood dirty and sticky.
One of the best cleaning techniques is to use baking soda. Just sprinkle one-two tablespoons on the board and then, spray white vinegar on it. It should foam up. Then all you have to do is rinse with hot water. This method is radical and keeps the board in good condition for longer.
Another grandma's trick is to use a mixture of baking soda and salt. Spread a good layer on the surface and let stand for a few minutes. Then, we rub half of a lemon on the board covered with salt and baking soda. Rinse with water and dry with a cloth. Note that it is totally inadvisable to immerse the board in water, because there is a risk that the wood will crack.
How do you clean a plastic cutting board?
A plastic cutting board is undeniably easier to clean than a wooden board. Unlike living material, artificial material does not absorb juice or odors. A simple rinse is sometimes quite sufficient. Aside from your favorite dishwashing liquid, you can use a sponge soaked in white vinegar to naturally clean the surface of a plastic cutting board. Then, it must be allowed to air dry before storing it. Unlike wooden boards, plastic ones can be cleaned in a dishwasher.
A paste of baking soda and water is ideal for cleaning a plastic cutting board. Just soak a clean sponge in white vinegar and rub the board with it. In a bowl, we prepare a paste made from 2 tablespoons of baking soda and a tablespoon of lukewarm water.
Another smart way to clean and sanitize a plastic cutting board is to mix 1 tablespoon of bleach (or 15 ml) in 4 liters of water. Just submerge the board in the solution for 3-4 minutes. Then, we let dry in the open air and voila.
Now that you know how to clean a cutting board, make sure you never forget to deodorize and maintain your own. Regular cleaning is essential to keep it in good condition and prolong its life. The hottest cycle in the dishwasher is ideal for cleaning a board with a non-porous surface, whether it is glass, marble or plastic. Regular replacement of deformed boards is recommended.
It is strongly recommended not to cut all foods on the same cutting board. This helps prevent the spread of bacteria and avoid contaminating raw foods. The best approach is to use different boards and designate one for meats and seafood, another for fruits and vegetables, one for cheese etc.
