Given this situation, it is essential to give preference to nursing staff. It has therefore become impossible for citizens to wear protective masks. And although some online stores offer it, delivery can even take weeks due to the state of emergency.

This severe shortage has awakened the creativity of many talented people around the world and DIY anti-virus masks have taken over social media. Many tutorials are available on the Web explaining how to make a protective mask yourself from various materials. However, experts doubt the effectiveness of these DIY protective devices.

European Union rules state that a respiratory protection mask must consist of three layers including a filter. However, the majority of homemade masks contain only one layer and no filters. They therefore cannot replace a standardized mask. In addition, the authorities and some experts stress that these devices are not effective against the coronavirus and that they do not protect the wearer or those around them. It is true that they are able to filter out large particles such as pollen and dust, but this does not apply to viruses which are microorganisms.

How to make a protective mask from a bandana?

In addition to offering many trendy models, the bandana mask can be made in two steps and three movements without sewing and using only two elements: two hair elastics and a square cotton bandana measuring 50 x 50 cm. Wash your hands well for at least 20 seconds and sanitize the work surface before starting.

1. As a bonus, lay out your bandana on your work surface.

2. Next, fold the bandana back over itself. Flip and press to make it smooth.

3. Slide the two rubber bands through the ends, leaving a distance of about 15 cm between the bands.

4. Finally, fold the edges and insert them into each other. Nothing complicated!
