The popularity of succulents has skyrocketed in recent years because of their attractive shapes and easy maintenance. Both exotic and a bit strange, they are the ideal decoration for every interior and exterior. But do you know which strain is perhaps the cutest of all? The succulent dolphin, also known by the Latin name Senecio peregrinus, literally looks like dolphins ready to jump out of the water. Find all the secrets of this unique plant in the rest of this article.
Succulent dolphin - adopt the new 100% cute plant
The dolphin plant, also known as "Dolphin Thread" (Senecio peregrinus), is a rare succulent variety that resembles a group of leaping dolphins. It is an unusual hybrid between S. rowleyanus (Rowley's groundsel) and S. articulatus (candle plant). It can be hard to find, but it's worth it. Fortunately, this beautiful plant is not very demanding. The succulent dolphin is used to living in harsh conditions, which makes it resistant to drought and even fairly cold temperatures. However, we will give you some useful tips to achieve the best conditions and have a pretty plant just like the ones in the photos.
How to maintain your dolphins?
Senecio Peregrinus needs bright but filtered light and a minimum temperature of 15 ° C. The plant thrives mainly in spring and autumn. During this time, she needs a little more water - once a week. Reduce watering to once a month when growth is weak. Usually it is winter and summer. The best way to water the succulent dolphin is to give it a good dose of water until it drains out of the pot's drainage hole. Then, allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. You can easily understand if your plant is well cared for. If you see dull, deflated, and dry leaves, it means your Dolphin is running low on water. On the other hand, if you see soft, yellow or transparent leaves, this means that your Dolphin is getting more water than he needs. Like most succulents, Senecio Peregrinus can rot if overwatered. It is therefore necessary to choose a well-drained soil such as a cactus / succulent mixture and put it in a container whose bottom is pierced with drainage holes.
In addition, dolphins thrive in low attendance conditions. So use a flowerpot that is slightly larger than the plant. If you are lucky, you will also see the small white flowers which bloom in January-February. The succulent dolphin can reach 15cm in height and retains its shape as it grows. The longer the vine, the more leaves it will provide you with until you have an entire ocean of jumping dolphins!
How do you grow a succulent dolphin?
It's super easy to grow succulent dolphins from cuttings. You must use stem cuttings. The separated dolphin leaves do not take root or form new plants. So, place the cuttings on a ground and make sure that the stem is in good contact with. The first few days, water lightly to prevent dehydration and so that the roots can form. Normally it takes 2 - 3 weeks.
You can also grow your plant from seeds. In this case, don't forget to soak them in hot water and then in cold water so that they germinate. Then you can plant the seeds in a pot. Cover it with plastic wrap with a few holes for ventilation. Spray your seeds quite often to keep the soil slightly moist. Once your seedlings are established, you can cover them with plastic.
Where can you find a succulent dolphin?
This pretty plant with bizarre leaves is extremely popular thanks to social media. So, it is not yet possible to find it in supermarkets. You should rather look for it on the Internet or in orangeries specializing in growing succulents. Since it takes time to produce new plants which are currently in vogue, the plants are small and the prices are high compared to other plants of similar size. They are often sold in 5 cm pots. You can also find seeds.
Where to put your dancing dolphin pot?
Your small green plant aquarium can decorate the interior as well as the exterior of your home. You just have to take into account that these little dolphins need a lot of light, but not direct sunlight. So put them next to a south-facing window if possible. You can leave them in the purchased pot, or combine them with other plants in a larger pot. If you like crafts, you can prepare a decorated flower pot to better suit the plant to your interior design. What if you hang it up using a macrame hanger? How about arranging your succulents nicely on a shelf?
