This year, one of the top trends in Christmas decoration is the rustic style set. In general, this type of pastoral decor is not too expensive and you can easily afford a few baubles or garlands in raw nature. But everyone knows the best rustic Christmas decorations are homemade ones! Nothing mass-produced could match a handmade decorative item and its authentic rude charm, right? So, our present craft guide will explain how to make a rustic looking twine ball and how to integrate it harmoniously into your Christmas decoration 2020.
Deco trend 2020: rustic style string ball

Okay, the festive 2020 decoration favors handmade objects, even better if they are made from organic materials. Salt dough garlands, homemade table runners… there are quite a few good examples to follow! But the first thing to do before embarking on making a Christmas decoration, whether rustic or otherwise, is to get the necessary DIY materials. Ours is not too specific and you can find everything in any craft supply store, namely:

ball of jute string a
few small balloons *
plastic wrap / transparent plastic bags
roll of kraft adhesive paper
glue for cutting ** glitter spray
brush
(optional)
pair of scissors
ribbons
hot glue gun + cartridges
bells, bells, berries and leaves artificial holly etc.

* if you want to get different size twine balls, use various balloons
** it is a water-based glue which also serves as a sealant and which becomes transparent after complete drying
A rustic decoration to do yourself step by step

First, inflate the balloons to the desired size and wrap them in plastic wrap. A good alternative option is to simply place them in small, clear plastic bags. You must not omit this step, otherwise the balloon will stick to the jute string and it will be very difficult for you to remove it once the glue has dried.

Secure the free end of the string somewhere on the balloon using a small piece of tape. Then start winding the cord all around the balloon in a random fashion, keeping it taut. Once you have the desired ball of string tape the string in place and cut off the excess.
Your string ball is starting to take shape

Since decoupage glue is usually a little too thick, it will probably need to be thinnered a bit. So prepare a mixture of one part water and two parts glue and check if you can easily apply the mixture with a brush.

A more runny consistency will also allow you to soak the entire ball in the mixture, but this can turn out to be a somewhat messy process. Either way, make sure the string ball is evenly coated with glue so that it will hold its shape after drying.
Drying and final steps

Then, hang your future festive ornaments in a well-ventilated area, to dry for at least 24 hours. Please spread a layer of plastic wrap on the underside of your still wet dumpling garland to catch any glue smudges.
The next day, your patience will be rewarded. Pop the balloon inside the string ball and gently remove it, also removing the plastic bag locked inside. Your basic string sphere is ready and waiting to be decorated however you see fit!
A small sphere tied with several decorative uses

It should be noted that the next step is completely optional. It is indeed the use of aerosol glitter powder. The use of a sparkly finish is a subject of discussion in the context of rustic decorating because on the one hand it can diminish the authentic rude effect of the DIY object. On the other hand, anything that glitters ideally harmonizes with Christmas decorations and many people simply cannot remain indifferent to this festive glow. In any case, if you decide to use the shimmering spray be sure to spray the string ball outside the house, placing it inside a cardboard box. It usually takes 1 to 2 hours to set the sparkling varnish.

The last step in this fascinating DIY is to decorate the string ball with small rustic objects using the hot glue gun. Red ribbon bows, brass or copper finish bells and bells, tiny acorns and miniature pine cones, artificial holly berries and leaves are just a few of the wonderful variations you can try this year..
Decoration ideas to put on or to hang

Regarding the use of the ball itself in the decoration of the house for Christmas, there are several ways that one can take. The first is to tie a wire loop to the braided sphere so that we can then hang it on the tree. The other option is to use it as a decorative element to put either at the festive table or on the mantle of the fireplace. Logically, the latter does not require the addition of a hook.

Finally, the more productive among you can make several balls of the same size and thread them along a string of natural fibers to obtain an unparalleled Christmas garland. Whatever your choice, the raw nature ornaments are truly magical!
