As you've probably already noticed, handmade decorating is the latest in the 2020 festive season. Rustic twine balls, personalized socks and salt dough garlands are just a few of the many DIY options. that you can try to breed at home this year. The more authentic, even “raw” their appearance, the better they are! Today we would like to present to you another variation of decoration of this kind, namely the natural Christmas wreath.
A natural and fragrant Christmas garland

In order to make a natural Christmas garland similar to the one shown in the images below, you will need:
2.5 to 4.5 kg of oranges (best of the Naveline variety)
100 grams of dried bay leaves
natural wood beads of 15 mm, 20 mm or other sizes
waxed cotton thread (at least twice longer than the desired length of the garland)
tassel prefabricated tassel
large sewing needle
pair of scissors
Optional accessories:
cinnamon sticks
star anise
jute, linen or red velvet ribbons
pine cones, acorns, holly berries, bells, etc.

It is the right moment to take a parenthesis with regard to the material used. Yes, we 100% agree that for a lot of people using 5 kilos of oranges to make a garland, even though it's the most beautiful garland in the world, is totally unnecessary waste. It is exactly for this reason that we would like to offer you an economical alternative, in particular the manufacture of decorations from orange peels. If, on the other hand, spending 5 euros in total on materials doesn't worry you, here are the steps to follow:
Dry the orange slices

Obviously, the sliced oranges have to be dried first. Allow at least a day's time for this step as it takes around 4-5 hours per batch. Cut the oranges into slices between 0.5 and 1 cm thick and arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Better yet, please use a cooling grid which will optimize the circulation of hot air. Dry in the oven at 80 ° C for 4 to 5 hours until the oranges dry completely and harden. Monitor them at least once an hour because all ovens are different and cooking times may vary. Make sure the slices are free of moisture, otherwise they could develop mold and rot over time.

Once the oranges have dried, you can begin to assemble your future natural Christmas garland. In this case, using waxed cotton thread is a great idea not only because it is extremely resistant but also because the wax itself makes it easy to thread the various elements. Cut double the intended length for your garland. First thread the pompom and fold the waxed cotton thread in half. Line up the ends and twist them a bit as shown in the photo above.
Thread the tassel tassel and some beads

Twisting the ends of the wire is a trick that will give your wire an even more rigid structure which will then allow you to easily slide it inside the holes of the wooden beads. Thread on a few and prepare the navel slices, dried bay leaves and any other organic material you would like to add to your natural Christmas wreath to make it more original.
Alternate different natural materials

Next, use a large sewing needle that will allow you to easily punch holes in the oranges and bay leaves. Make a hole in the center of each slice, thread a few without aiming for an overly neat arrangement and check if you are happy with the result. Do the same with the bay leaves.

You can even use the broken leaves as their shape cannot be clearly distinguished once they are on the garland. Keep in mind that you can also pass the thread through the eye of the needle, as long as it is wide enough and then directly thread the elements one after the other.

Continue to alternate the orange slices and bay leaves, not forgetting to add a few natural wood beads here and there. If you have other objects suitable for making a natural Christmas garland such as cinnamon sticks, star anise etc. add them wherever you want.

Of course, you could not successfully pierce any kind of object of natural origin but you can become inventive. As an alternative you can tie them directly to a segment of the thread or glue them somewhere on the garland using a few drops of instant set glue.

Finish the chain with a few more wooden beads. Bring the end of the waxed cord inside the last bead you threaded to obtain a loop. Finally, tie a double knot as close to the last bead as possible. Cut the excess wire, keeping the loop for hanging.

That's all ! Your original decoration is ready to decorate and flavor the interior of your home during the upcoming holidays! And if the oranges are properly dried, it will last for several years to come. Just be sure to keep it dry.
